Battle Royale games are here to stay. Established blockbusters like Fortnite and PUBG have been joined by Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, and dozens of other battle royale games over the past several years, and there are plenty more on the way.
The formula is easy to grasp: a large number of players enter a map and fight to be the last player (or squad) left standing. The safe zone of the map typically grows smaller during the match, forcing the remaining players into combat with each other. As the genre has grown, many games have their own twists, like hero abilities, magic powers, and the ability to revive fallen teammates or ‘buy’ them back into the game.
Here are the battle royale games we’re playing, and the upcoming battle royales to watch out for.
Ubisoft’s upcoming free-to-play battle royale takes place in a dense futuristic city. Loot and weapons are streamlined, and players regenerate automatically instead of through pickups.
The game is in a Tron-inspired world, some exciting Twitch integration, and ridiculously fast-paced gameplay. The most noticeable difference is the pace of Hyper Scape. It’s the fastest battle royale around, with a map that’s entirely urban, you can expect very little downtime as you battle in city streets and apartment buildings. The movement is also faster than in any other battle royale, with double-jumping and auto-mantling encouraging plenty of vertical play. Hyper Scape hacks only accelerate the action, letting players pick up abilities like a blink-style teleport or a devastating gravity slam attack that would make Thor blush. Of course, if you want to be a little more stealthy you can also pick up hacks that make you invisible, lay traps, or transform into an armored bouncing orb.
32 worms battle to be the last worm standing in the first Worms game with real-time combat, due out this year. If you played Worms, you definitely need to play this one.
While the shift to real-time combat is a significant one, the classic Worms DNA is still very much evident in Worms Rumble.
Slapstick battles are, for instance, still viewed from a side-on perspective as players hurl themselves around a series of colorful, partly destructible arenas – and it sounds like plenty of classic weapons will be returning too (alongside a variety of new additions), with Team 17 making reference to the likes of the Bazooka, Shotgun, Sheep, Holy Hand-grenade, and Banana Bomb in its announcement material.
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
Less like the head-to-head violence we’ve come to expect from battle royale games and more like the physical humor of Gang Beasts meets Ninja Warrior.
The game, which is in development at Mediatonic, puts 60 contestants through multiple rounds of escalating chaos until a single victor remains. The rounds will shift between free-for-alls and cooperative challenges in which the losing team all gets eliminated, according to the developer. A few examples include Door Dash, in which players must smash through doors in a race to the finish, and Jump Club, which sees players avoiding swinging arms on a rotating platform.
The 50 survivors of Odin’s army face off in this third- and first-person melee brawler. Headed to Early Access “soon.”
Valhall isn’t merely a battle royale, although that’s going to be a major part of it. There’s also a siege mode that works as an introduction to the battle royale, and it’s all taking place in the Nine Worlds of Norse mythology.
Combat looks fluid but furious. It’s all swords and axes and bows and arrows, and you’ve got the ability to swap back and forth from first to third person, with dynamic systems for attacks and dodges that adapt to the weapon you’re holding.
Players mix and match spells and equip magical gear to take out their opponents in this creative and colorful mage-based battle royale.
Spellbreak is an epic fantasy action spellcasting game where players fight to become an all-powerful battlemage. Weave spectacular spell combinations, craft strategic builds, and master your environment as you dominate the Hollow Lands solo or with friends in a non-stop quest for survival.
